Why am I, and a lot of other normally sane people, so enthusiastic about Shergolds?

"The Shergold set-up is aggressively British. The Company was established by two craftsmen, experts in their respective fields who were to an extent frustrated by building a wide variety of guitars under trade names. They decided, in popular jargon, to do their own thing...to make instruments which would embody the results of their comprehensive experience...to prove that "Britain can make it" and at a price which will benefit the consumer."

The opening paragraph from a contemporary Shergold advertising leaflet; With so few modern guitars having any real individual character, or being pale imitiations of 1950s designs, I think those few lines say it all...

Best of British
A few words from the Editor...

Thanks for stopping by at The Shergold Homepage. I hope you will find everything you wanted to know about Shergolds, but couldn't find anyone to ask...

This site is the only guide on the web (or anywhere else for that matter) to these classic British relics from the 70's.

You won't find any "under construction" logos around here, as I don't expect this site to ever be truly "finished" - bookmark this page and come back regularly, as more content will arrive as more people contact me, and I get my hands on more Shergolds and snippets of information.

If you want to know more, or have any information or anecdotes about Shergolds, feel free to send me email. I try to respond to all enquiries within a few days wherever possible!

Website Production Details
Tools
This is an entirely "hand crafted" site (originally built using Homesite on Windows, but now BBEdit on Apple Mac OS X) powered by PHP4 and MySQL.
Open Standards
XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets are used to try and ensure the same output in all the major browsers while using the same source pages. The site content is initially designed and tested on Mac OS X with Safari, Netscape 7 and Internet Explorer 5.2. On Windows we test Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.x, and Firefox.
Earlier versions of Internet Explorer should also work but are now no longer actively tested. Specific support is provided for IE3 and Netscape 4.x through separate Style sheets to work around the issues with these browsers - however many formatting directives plain don't work in these older browsers, so the output may not be the same as was intended. Other modern HTML4 and CSS compliant browsers (Mozilla, Opera etc) should also work with the default style sheets. Browsers earlier than anything mentioned here will not work very well - you'll see the text and pictures, but the formatting, colour and layout of the pages will not be anywhere near as they were intended.
Dynamic Content
Much of the content displayed on the site is created "on-the-fly" using PHP4 and MySQL, maintained through HTML forms in a restricted area of the site. This approach simplifies administration, ensures consistency and means we can make most site content changes from anywhere there's a web browser with an Internet link. For example the index of links that you can see above is generated from a database table that contains details of each page and its relation to the others. This same data is used to create the "previous" and "next" page navigation links on the footer of each page. The Gallery is the most obvious place where this dynamic content is visible - the images are added through a form to three tables that can then be used to construct the "overlap" cross references. News, the Collection, and much more are all maintained this way.
