Guide to Shergold Hardware
The aim of this page will be to detail all the variations of hardware (bridges, pickups,
switches, machine heads, etc) that were fitted to Shergolds. This is expected to be used
as a way of dating and verifying the originality of different models.
Machine Heads
Schaller M6N - Nylon body guitar machine heads

These can be found fitted to most Shergold models. A version with the mini key of the M6N series
is usually fitted to twelve strings (Schaller part code M6MN) and occasionally on six strings.
The nylon body is used to reduce cost and the weight of the headstock.
Schaller M6M - Chrome body miniature guitar machine heads

Schaller Website)
The illustrated machine head is finished in gold - Shergold used only chrome except on
a very few special orders. These are usually only found fitted to early models (principally on
Modulators in early 1976) - later models
use the M6N nylon bodied version.
Schaller BM - Chrome open back bass machine heads

Schaller Website)
Fitted to earlier Shergold basses, these require a larger drill hole through the
headstock than the later closed back types (manufacturer unknown).
Schaller M4 - Chrome closed back bass machine heads
(Picture from
Schaller Website)
The illustrated machine head is finished in gold - Shergold used only chrome.
Fitted to the four low strings on Shergold eight string basses along with four M6 machines on
the high strings.
