Cavalier 6-string
THE CAVALIER 6-STRING is the first of an exciting new range of Shergold guitars combining
the fine Shergold neck with a new body via a unique straight-through joint. The extended,
completely detachable neck section passes through a rectangular slot between the cutaways
in the body and is bolted in place beneath the tailpiece. The result is a slim joint with
small heel which eliminates problems with access to the top fret while ensuring maximum
sustain.
The 25½" inch scale length neck is precision-machined and hand-finished from
selected seasoned Canadian hard rock maple. The fingerboard is burnished and fretted by
hand using generous camber nickel silver T-section fret wire, then sealed with durable
polyurethane and bound at the edges to lip over the fret ends. The unique Shergold
counteradjustable truss rod maintains perfect level of action with any gauge of string
while the hand-cut and fitted ivory fingerboard nut ensures correct string height at the
first fret.
The body is made from selected, kilndried hardwoods chosen for stability and grain, and the
symmetrical double cutaway design is dimensioned and shaped to give perfect balance and
maximum rigidity without excessive weight. The tough polyester finish is available in five
attractive colours: black, white, natural, sunburst or cherry.
The instrument is fitted with two very high output humbucking pick-ups designed as a
matching pair exclusively for Shergold. Each incorporates 12 adjustable polepieces.
Controls on the instrument are the result of Shergold's extensive research into guitar
circuitry which has enabled the best possible arrangement for this particular instrument
to be perfected.
Three carefully positioned selector switches allow a wide choice of pick-up combinations
to be controlled by one volume pot and one tone pot for each pick-up. The switch nearest
the bridge selects the bridge pick-up. neck pick-up or both together. The middle switch
affects the bridge pick-up only, and selects single coil (superflux type). out-of-phase
humbucker or normal humbucker mode for that pick-up. The third switch does the same for
the neck pick-up.
An added sophistication is the provision of a stereo/mono output jack enabling the two
pick-ups to be fed to separate amplifiers or separate channels of one amp if desired.
Heavily chromium-plated fittings complete the trim of the guitar. Machines are Schaller
while the combined bridge/ tailpiece is a Shergold design in steel and perspex with six
individual saddles adjustable for string height and intonation. Scratchplate and control
mounting plate are in high-gloss black plastic.
A rectangular plush-lined padded case is available specifically for this model.
Cavalier 12 String
SHERGOLD HAVE ALREADY established a reputation for building electric 12-strings that are
as easy to play as any 6-string, and the Cavalier 12-string is no exception. Its headstock
is longer to accommodate the extra machines but otherwise the neck has the same dimensions
as that of the Cavalier 6-string. In fact the two necks are completely interchangeable,
and the musician can convert one guitar to the other simply by purchasing the appropriate
new neck and tailpiece.

Cavalier Doublenecks
Available in 12+6, 12+4, and 6+4 neck combinations
SHERGOLD'S WORK WITH doubleneck guitars began literally with a phone call from Genesis
guitarist Mike Rutherford. Mike wanted Shergold to build him a demountable instrument -
basically a 12+4 combination which could be broken down into two separate instruments
but which would actually take a total of five different necks. The result was the special
doubleneck with which Rutherford is usually depicted nowadays in the Music Press, and
also the inspiration for a completely new line from Shergold.
The company's first non-demountable production doublenecks were the Custom range made
for distributor Barnes & Mullins. This range is now complemented by the Cavalier
Doublenecks, which are available in 12+6, 12+4 and 6+4 combinations. In these instruments,
the 12-string neck is usually on top and, where appropriate, the bass on the bottom
unless otherwise specified by the customer. (There is as yet no single neck bass guitar
in the Cavalier range. but this logical development is promised for the near future).
The necks use the standard Cavalier 6 and 12-string necks and. where required, the
Shergold 34 inch scale-length bass neck. mounted on a widened Cavalier body which
accommodates two pairs of pick-ups and appropriately modified controls.
The body, though wider than that of the standard instrument, is carefully designed for
balance, and finishes are available in the same five polyesters: black, white, natural.
sunburst and cherry.
The instrument is fitted with two very high output humbucking pick-ups for each neck.
designed as matching pairs exclusively for Shergold. The 6 and 12-string pick-ups, each
incorporate 12 adjustable pole-pieces while the bass pickups each incorporate 16.
Controls are similar to those of the single neck instruments except that for the sake of
simplicity, there is just one volume pot and one tone pot to control all the pick-ups.
The only addition is a three position neck selector switch which chooses top, bottom,
or both necks. The pick-up selector and the two coil-tap selectors operate according to
which neck selection is made. Stereo/mono operation is facilitated by separate mono and
stereo jack sockets.
Heavily chromium-plated fittings complete the trim. Machines are Schaller while the two
steel-and-perspex, bridge/tail pieces have six individual saddles (four on the bass)
adjustable for height and intonation.
Rectangular, plush-lined, padded cases are available specifically for these models.
