Shergold
After Burns and Baldwin, Jack Golder and Norman Holder continued in the guitar-making
business, supplying instruments to various companies, including the Rosetti 'Triumph' model
in 1968 and a range of solids for Barnes & Mullins earlier that year, these being the
original 'Shergold' models, a name that was to be revived in later years. Then came the
'Hayman' range and the future looked comparatively settled. However, this company 'went under'
in the Dallas-Arbiter upheaval and Jack and Norman were out in the cold and in the red! They
decided to literally struggle on alone, and by sheer hard work and determination succeeded in
establishing their own 'Shergold' range of guitars, at the same time still supplying necks and
bodies for other companies, including Burns UK and 'Ned Callan'. Jack and Norman now concentrate
solely on their own 'Shergold' products, export orders alone ensure that they have no time to
spare for 'outside' work, although they have been known to produce the occasional 'one-off'
for a private customer when asked nicely!
The instruments that originate from the small but efficient four-man factory certainly continue
the Burns tradition of fine, hand-crafted British guitars. Although classed as 'mass-produced',
the care and attention paid to each model is certainly equivalent to that of many 'custom'
guitar makers. Although the Burns heritage is undeniable, 'Shergold' guitars are good
instruments in their own right, and their success is just reward for the efforts and endeavors
of Jack Golder and Norman Holder.
